Event: Madagascar will host a visit from Pope Francis from September 6-9 in Antananarivo. Up to 2 million people are expected in and around the capital. Traffic may be extremely congested, and emergency services’ ability to respond, such as ambulances and police, may be impeded. The availability of taxi or other transportation services will be severely limited. Restaurants and grocery stores may be closed. Major events are a prime opportunity for thieves and other criminal elements to prey upon unsuspecting tourists.
The U.S. Embassy in Antananarivo will have limited staffing on September 6 and September 9. The Consular Section will provide only emergency services during this period.
