National Day Celebrations and Road Closures

On June 26, Madagascar will celebrate its Independence Day.  As a part of this celebration, the Urban Commune of Antananarivo has reserved Avenue de l’Independence for pedestrians from June 15 to June 30.  This has led to increased congestion in and around the capital.  In addition, there are numerous street closures due to construction related to the Francophonie Conference, scheduled for November.

During upcoming weekend celebrations, large crowds are expected.  The Embassy recommends U.S. citizens exercise caution when traveling in Antananarivo, and consider avoiding the city if possible – in particular, downtown areas near Avenue de l’Independence.

Review your personal security plans, remain aware of your surroundings, including local events, and monitor local news stations for updates.  Be vigilant and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security.
