Last week, the Government of Madagascar (GOM) revised eligibility criteria for the AstraZeneca/Covishield COVID-19 vaccine that was allocated to the country through the COVAX initiative. Individuals 18 and over are now eligible to be vaccinated. The U.S. Embassy strongly encourages those wanting to receive a COVID-19 vaccine to take advantage of this opportunity as soon as possible since the quantity of doses is limited. (The GOM received 250,000 doses of Astrazeneca/Covishield on May 8 and has administered 31,000 doses to date.)
The following are the three main vaccination sites in Antananarivo:
- HJRA Anosy Vaccinodrome
- CSS Tsaralalana
- UN Vaccination site in Galaxy Building
For vaccine sites outside Antananarivo, contact the local district health authorities.
If you or your family members wish to receive a first dose of AstraZeneca/Covishield, these sites are now accepting walk-ins. They have seen a large influx of individuals since the eligibility criteria was revised. We would therefore recommend that you go there early in the morning and bring a valid identification document that will be recognized by Malagasy authorities. Please note that these vaccines are being administered through the Malagasy health system. The Embassy cannot make or guarantee appointments through this system.
The GOM expects a second shipment of vaccines to arrive in July to complete vaccination of those who receive their first dose by June 18.
