The American Corner Tolagnaro is a cross-cultural resource center established in collaboration with the US Embassy Madagascar, QMM Rio Tinto, and the English Center of Fort Dauphin. The American Corner is open to the public for free. The Corner provides access to over 300 books, computers with high speed internet, tablets, e-readers, and DVDs/CDs to the community of Fort Dauphin in order to promote American culture and the English language. In doing so the Corner hosts a variety of programs including a bi-weekly English Cafe, Movie and karaoke nights, English Club, weekly English teaching radio programs (Thirty Minute English and Let’s Talk in English) and cross-cultural celebrations so that members can bolster their English and learn about the culture of America.
The corner also helps promote environmental protection in the Southeastern of Madagascar through its weekly Environment Conservation Club known as ‘’Phelsuma Antanosy Conservation Club’’ which is held every Wednesday afternoon. The corner partners with local schools and organizations to establish School Gardens and organize neighborhood cleanings in Taolagnaro.
And furthermore, the corner also organizes soft skills trainings such as Computer Class, English Classes for business purpose only, life skills empowerment and lecture series to help youth populations in Fort-Dauphin achieve their professional and personal goals.
