COVID-19 Information

***  Effective December 6, 2021, all airline passengers to the United States ages two years and older, regardless of vaccination status or citizenship, must provide a negative COVID-19 viral test taken within one calendar day of travel.  Alternatively, travelers to the United States may provide documentation from a licensed health care provider of having recovered from COVID-19 in the 90 days preceding travel.  Check the CDC website for additional information and Frequently Asked Questions. ***

Country-Specific Information

    • Borders are open, but domestic and international flights remain limited. Current international flight paths route through Ethiopia, France, Italy, Kenya, Mauritius, Mayotte, and Reunion.
    • Public gatherings of all sizes are permitted. Mask wearing and physical distancing is recommended, but not always practiced.
    • Individuals 18 years of age and older are eligible for vaccination. Those interested in being vaccinated against COVID-19 can bring a valid ID card to any vaccination site in Antananarivo of Antsirabe that accepts walk-in appointments.  Available COVID-19 vaccines include AstraZeneca, Johnson&Johnson, Pfizer, and Sinopharm.  Booster shots are also available.

COVID-19 Testing

    • Are either PCR or antigen tests available for U.S. citizens in Madagascar? Yes
    • If so, are test results reliably available by the following calendar day? Yes
      • Hospital Manarapenitra Andohatapenaka, LAMM, and IPM Avaradoha offer PCR tests for COVID-19. For IPM Avaradoha, the cost is 313,800 AR.  You must bring your passport and a copy of your passport, visa, and ticket.  Results are available in 24 hours electronically or by pickup.  Their number is 020-22-401 64/65.  Institut Pasteur offers serological tests for COVID-19.  In each region Centre Hospitalier Regional (CHRR) or Centre Hospitalier de district (CHRD) should offer PCR tests.
    • For information on limited humanitarian exemptions to CDC’s requirement that all U.S. bound travelers present a negative COVID test, please review the Department’s latest guidance.
      • Humanitarian exemptions to this order will be granted on an extremely limited basis and will only be considered when the country of departure lacks adequate COVID-19 testing capacity.

COVID-19 Vaccine Information:

    • Has the government of Madagascar approved a COVID-19 vaccine for use? Yes
    • Are vaccines available in Madagascar for U.S. citizens to receive? Yes
    • Which vaccines are available in Madagascar? AstraZeneca, Johnson&Johnson, Pfizer, and Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccines are all on offer.  Booster shots are also available.
    • Individuals 18 years of age and older are now eligible for vaccination. Those interested in being vaccinated against COVID-19 no longer need to register.  Instead, they can bring a valid ID card to any vaccination site in Antananarivo of Antsirabe that accepts walk-in appointments.  For sites outside Antananarivo and Antsirabe, contact the local district’s health authorities.

    • The U.S. government does not plan to provide COVID-19 vaccinations to private U.S. citizens overseas.  Please follow host country developments and guidelines for COVID-19 vaccination.

Entry and Exit Requirements

    • Are U.S. citizens permitted to enter? Yes
    • Is a negative COVID-19 test (PCR and/or serology) required for entry? Yes
      • Passengers five years and older must hold a negative PCR test obtained 72 hours prior to departure. Passengers and crew members must also undergo a rapid antigen test upon arrival at the traveler’s expense.  Tests cost 20 USD, which must be paid in cash.  Travelers no longer need to quarantine while waiting for the test result
    • Are health screening procedures in place at airports and other ports of entry? Yes
    • The Government of Madagascar no longer allows free tourist visa extensions. Those on tourist visas must purchase a ticket to depart Madagascar and then go to the Immigration Office or Ivato Airport to get a stamp allowing them to remain until their return ticket date.

Movement Restrictions

    • Is a curfew in place? No
    • Are there restrictions on intercity or interstate travel? No

Quarantine Information 

    •  Are U.S. citizens required to quarantine? It depends.
      • If a traveler tests negative upon arrival, there is no need to quarantine. If a traveler tests positive, a seven-day quarantine in a hotel approved by the Malagasy health service is required at the traveler’s expense.  The traveler must take a test every 48 hours until achieving a negative result.  If symptoms persist after seven days, the traveler may have to remain in quarantine for a longer period of time.

    • Are commercial flights operating? Yes
      • Both domestic and international commercial flights are operating, but limited. Current international flight paths route through Ethiopia, France, Italy, Kenya, Mauritius, Mayotte, and Reunion.
    • Is public transportation operating?
      • Hand sanitizer is provided upon entry. Passengers, drivers, and assistants all must wear masks.

Fines for Non-Compliance

    • Failure to wear a mask in public can result in arrest for 24 hours.
