Location: Antananarivo and regional cities throughout Madagascar
Event: Opposition politicians continue public meetings downtown every day starting at 10 a.m. and dispersing typically around 6:00 in the evening. All protests that have taken place to date have gathered in the area of May 13th Square in downtown Antananarivo. Recent gatherings have drawn large crowds and shown the potential for tensions to escalate.
We also expect a march from downtown to Iavoloho Palace on Saturday, May 12.
Finally, we expect continued large gatherings in regional cities throughout Madagascar.
U.S. citizens are strongly advised to use caution if going to an area where a large gathering may take place.
Actions to Take:
- Avoid the areas of the meetings in Analakely and the surrounding areas in downtown Antananarivo of Soarano, Behoririka, Tsaralalana, Ambodifilao, Ambatomena, Andohan’Analakely, and Ambohijatovo.
- Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests.
- Monitor local media for updates.
- Review your personal security plans.
- Keep a low profile.
